Doctors for Human Rights today issued a plea to the international community to maintain its pressure on Sudan to end the violations of international human rights and humanitarian law and bring peace to Dafur.
Speaking in London today, DHR’s Chair, Dr. Peter Hall said, “I am appalled to hear Sudan’s ambassador in London trying to set constraints on the investigation and possible prosecution by the International Criminal Court (ICC) announced yesterday.”
“An independent investigation by an international body offers the people of Sudan an opportunity to identify the perpetrators of the violations in their land and will not inhibit the government from bringing them to justice should they choose to.”
“Security Council Resolution 1593, which referred the situation to the ICC, could not be clearer. It decided that the Government of Sudan and all other parties to the conflict in Dafur shall cooperate fully with and provide any necessary assistance to the Court and the Prosecutor.”
“The international community must be firm on this and not allow justice to be held up by endless wrangling with the authorities in Khartoum. Innocent people are suffering needlessly as a result of the crimes clearly identified by the UN’s International Commission of Inquiry. It is time to end this conflict and start the healing process.”
